I find myself in the same boat when it comes to prolonging the conversation. I've been working at it lately by trying to bounce the conversational ball back and forth more. It's a lot easier, I can tell you, when it's somebody I know and am comfortable with. When I first meet someone though I have to remind myself to be more outspoken. After all, they are a potential client so I need to engage.
I recently joined my local chamber of commerce and have been getting myself out more and putting myself into more social situations. This has really helped not only my interpersonal skills but my business. It might be something you could consider as well?
